Christmas

By Josephine Asbury, 1957

As we greet this Christmas season
And our eyes are turned on high,
There are many changes round us,
New stars are in the sky.

These man-made stars that circle
In the realms of outer space,
And their other missile brothers;
Herald a grim and frightful race.

For survival on this planet
And the hope to live in peace;
Every nation now is striving
Its defenses to increase.

But the star that lit the manger
Announcing Jesus' birth
Had a different sort of message;
For the people of the earth.

And its rays still brightly glowing
Every yearning heart will fill
With the love and hope and mercy
Jesus came here to instill.
