It's Christmas

By Josephine Asbury, December 1945

When December's snow is flying, and Christmas time draws near;
"I can not get the spirit", are the words you'll often hear.

How can we get the spirit, if we've worry on our mind,
About the money we are spending, and no thought for all mankind?

How far we folks have gotten, in our rush for earthly things,
From true worship of the Christ Child, and the happy joy it brings.

Just remember 'tis Christ's birthday, that we pause to celebrate;
Not a carnival of spending, that will make sales records great.

Think how the humble Jesus, who was sent from God above,
Was the first to ever mention any doctrine of love.

So as we hang our wreaths of holly, set our Christmas lights aglow,
Can't we try to love each other, as He taught us long ago?

Can't we give the Christmas season a new meaning, deep and sure,
That will bring the world's great nations into lasting peace, secure?

Can't we make this land a beacon, that will throw a lifting light,
On the world's down trodden people, just by always doing right?
