Birthdays

By Josephine Asbury, January 1951
|
Do you like to have a birthday?
Tell me now!
Do you like to celebrate it?
Tell me, how?
Does a cake with flaming candles
All aglow,
And a party of your loved ones
Please you so?
Or would you rather have the day
Go on past,
With no notice made of it
From first to last?
You may laugh at celebrations
As such fuss,
But a bit of kindness pleases
Most of us.
And a greeting from a friend
Far away,
Will bring a spark of brightness
To your day.
Though the years are piling up,
And they show,
Every one will bring a birthday,
That I know.
And no matter how you'd dodge it,
If you could,
To disclaim that you have had one
Does no good;
So you might as well admit them,
And be glad
For all the joys between them
You have had.
And may the Lord's best blessing
Come to you,
When next a birthday celebration
Is your due.
